what are the characteristics of romantic poetry?

Please i need the answers before the end of the weekend because its part of ma course and i’ve to submit it on monday…i love romantic poems

In a general sense, the term Romantic has been used to refer to certain artists, poets, writers, musicians, as well as political, philosophical and social thinkers of the late eighteenth and early to mid nineteenth centuries. It has equally been used to refer to various artistic, intellectual, and social trends of that era. Despite this general usage of the term, a precise characterization and specific definition of Romanticism have been the subject of debate in the fields of intellectual history and literary history throughout the twentieth century, without any great measure of consensus emerging. Arthur Lovejoy attempted to demonstrate the difficulty of this problem in his seminal article "On The Discrimination of Romanticisms" in his Essays in the History of Ideas (1948); some scholars see romanticism as essentially continuous with the present, some see in it the inaugural moment of modernity, some see it as the beginning of a tradition of resistance to the Enlightenment— a Counter-Enlightenment— and still others place it firmly in the direct aftermath of the French Revolution. An earlier definition comes from Charles Baudelaire: "Romanticism is precisely situated neither in choice of subject nor exact truth, but in the way of feeling."

Many intellectual historians have seen Romanticism as a key movement in the Counter-Enlightenment, a reaction against the Age of Enlightenment. Whereas the thinkers of the Enlightenment emphasized the primacy of deductive reason, Romanticism emphasized intuition, imagination, and feeling, to a point that has led to some Romantic thinkers being accused of irrationalism.

What are some good websites, magazines, books, ect., that publish teen poetry?

I’m looking for a place on the internet where teens can publish their poetry. Could be a magazine, just a plain website, or even a teen poetry book that takes winners or whatever to write in their book. I’d really like the help! Also, if your a teen and your work has been published please tell me how or whatever!! thanks a bunch

What are some magazines that I could publish my poems and other short stories to?

See, I tried to get my poem Scooby published to Stone Soup Magazine, but they didn’t reply so that meant no. And I WAS going to just publish a book of poems myself, but my mom told me that I should publish a few of those poems and THEN get an agent and blah blah blah. So, If you could, what are some websites to magazine places that i could publish some of my poems/short stories to?

THANX!

For information on journals that publish poems, look at the book "Poet’s Market." For information on journals that publish short stories, try the book "Writer’s Market." Your local library might have copies.

http://www.poetsmarket.com/

http://www.writersmarket.com/

Your mother is right that you need to establish a track record of magazine publications before you think about publishing a book of poems. But don’t expect that it will be easy to get an agent for a poetry book. Agents make their money by taking a percentage of their clients’ earning. poetry books usually earn so little money that they’re simply not worth an agent’s time and attention.

What is the different between a poetry and a poem?

I am doing a poetry slam project for the theatre class right now, but some people called it poem and others called it poetry. Is it the same thing or similar?

Poetry is the genre. Poem is the individual work.

Like the difference between Music and Song.

10 Creative Marriage Proposals

Marriage proposals made over a romantic dinner are not always creative. Most ladies dream about the day their dream guy proposes to them and expects the day to be perfect in every way. A recent study showed that most married ladies felt that their partners splurged extravagantly on marriage proposals but that the unoriginality of it left them disappointed.

One creative way to propose for spouses in a long distance relationship is to have a surprise visit and set up a scavenger hunt. You may have a friend give your spouse instructions for the hunt. You might hide tiny surprises like candy, flowers and a CD on the first stops during the scavenger hunt, and then hide at the final location, ready to propose when your girlfriend completes the game.

An outdoor fan might appreciate a proposal during a camping trip. You might hide the ring in your sleeping bag to enhance the element of surprise. You could complain that there is a rock beneath you, then pull out the ring and propose. This is a creative suggestion as a camping trip isn’t a common proposal destination.

Another way is to place an ad in a local paper. You might place an outrageous ad in a paper asking anyone wanting to get married to call you and include a fictitious phone number. While your girlfriend is reading the papers, surprise her with the ring.

Proposing at a sports event is a creative way to propose to a sports fan. For this, you might either plan to have your proposal broadcasted over the general public address system or shown on the giant screen. If you are brave, you could contact the team’s press department and get permission to propose on the field at halftime.

Another option is to carve a heart in the last few pages of a new book of poetry, sewing the ring in it. You might suggest taking turns reading poems on each page and plan to have your girlfriend turn the final complete page to expose the ring that was hidden.

Having the DJ of your girl’s favourite radio program ask her if she’ll marry you is another creative proposal idea. You might also have the DJ play a song which has a special meaning for the both of you so you can enjoy a dance together after she accepts your proposal. Another option to propose is to have all your buddies and relatives join the event by inviting them to a surprise party for your girl.

Yet another way to propose is to hide the ring in an unusual location. You could pretend to have a clogged sink and whilst working to mend the clog, reach into the sink and pull out the ring.

Getting the waiter to bring out the ring with the bill is another play on traditional proposal. You could pretend to hint that you will be proposing, and your girlfriend will expect your proposal with each course. Get the waiter to bring out the ring only at the end of the dinner.

The ultimate proposal is for the girl to ask the man to wed her. Add your own creative twist by proposing to him instead of anxiously awaiting a proposal.
A wonderful marriage proposal does not need to be costly. A lot of ladies are likely to hold dear the memories of a proposal that was cheap but really creative.

Pithy Prose: the Wit & Wisdom of Robert Frost

by Philip Yaffe

Part 12 of an occasional series

I am a collector of quotations. I have been ever since I learned how to write, I mean professionally, not in primary school.

I am particularly fond of what I like to call “pithy prose”. These short quotations can cover an unlimited variety of subjects: love, religion, politics, human nature, etc. What unites them is their ability to say more in one or two sentences than could be expressed in a thousand-word treatise. It’s like being able to pour a liter of liquid into a half-liter bottle.

They are superb examples of Mark Twain’s famous dictum, “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.”

In principle, all writers and public speakers are capable of producing pithy prose, but clearly some are better at it than others.

Any collection of pithy prose must necessarily be biased in terms of what it includes and excludes. I make no apologies for my selections, only for the hundreds of other meritorious quotations I had to leave out.

No one will agree with all these quotations; this was not their intention. You may even find some of them repugnant or outrageous. This was their intention.

We seldom learn anything of value from what we already agree with. Only those ideas that grate on our nerves can open our minds. As with oysters, irritation can produce pearls. So if anything you are about to read annoys or shocks you, try to think clearly and dispassionately about what it is saying. You will either be confirmed in your current belief or shaken into re-examining it.

Either way, you win!

This article is part of an occasional series. In each article, I will be offering more amusing, educating, and exasperating quotations to your judgment. But just to be certain that we agree on what we are talking about, here it is in a nutshell.

Pithy Prose: A quotation where at first you may not be quite certain what it means. But when you become certain, you become equally certain that it couldn’t have been said better any other way. In short, big ideas in small packages.

If you have a better definition of pithy prose, please contact me. I would love to hear it.

Rediscovering Chapbooks

In the 1600′s most cultured socialites considered chapbooks vulgar. These ‘flimsy’ booklets were often sold in less than reputable establishments and contained a variety of less than quality poetry, stories, ballads and political dissent. Often filled with spelling mistakes, factual blunders and little in the way of quality assurance these chapbooks often connected with the uncultured alone.

Today you will find several colleges that are working to collect copies of aging chapbooks. International universities have collections of hundred and even thousands of these manuscripts.

What are chapbooks?

This type of literature provides a relatively small grouping of thoughts or poetry in a booklet form that is generally unacceptable in traditional book markets. The length of a chapbook rarely exceeds 50 pages and can be assembled using a home printer and publishing software or using an office supply store that provides copying services.

Chapbook History

In the past these booklets were sold by peddlers to others who enjoyed the simplified nature of the work.

Some chapbooks were purchased if only because paper was scarce and the pages of the chapbook were used to wrap food items for transport.

Chapbooks have historically received very little respect and ultimately faded away for a time with the advent of mass produced newspapers and other periodicals.

In many respects historical chapbooks are now considered desirable folk art and are appreciated in ways the original authors would find surprising.

Chapbooks Today

In the twenty-first century chapbooks are seeing a prominence they have not seen in the past.

Today chapbooks are successfully used to promote an author’s poetry or short stories. They are marketed online and in specialty shops. Some chapbook developers have used the work for philanthropic purposes while others have funded group projects and the distribution of personal writings.

A fundraising effort for families involved in the Sego Mining Disaster in West Virginia saw a poetry chapbook used to provide needed finances for those dealing with loss.

With the advent of easy-to-use publishing programs and printers who can mass-produce a chapbook at reasonable prices, there are more people than ever looking to impact others through the distribution of chapbooks.

Chapbook Future

Some chapbooks may be downloadable through PDF technology while other writers of chapbooks may move solidly toward ebook technology in the future in an effort to distribute their chapbooks thus avoiding paper distribution entirely.

It is safe to presume that the time-honored tradition of chapbooks will see these little publications delight, encourage and challenge readers for centuries to come.

Homosexuality

Homosexuality

By Punkerslut

It was once remarked by Dr. Laura, “What I did say is that when
an individual is not so drawn to a member of the opposite sex,
in biology, that’s some kind of error.” Dr. Laura’s distaste of
Homosexuality is nothing new, and there has been much advocacy
against her on part of these views. Others, who hold similar
views, have defended her opinions. However, what she said her,
it may hold some kernal of truth. It may very well be truth,
that biologically, it is an “error,” if such a term has any real
meaning, for someone to be Homosexual. By pursuing an individual
of the same sex, procreation cannot occur. It becomes an
impossibility in this scenario. If the natural purpose of every
organism is to procreate, that their offspring may also
procreate indefinitely, then I have no argument. If it happens
to be true, that the purpose of life is simply procreation, of
reproducing the old generation, then I cannot deny the truth of
the statement, that Homosexuality is “some kind of error.” I can
present no argument that I genuinely believe, no objection that
I sincerely hold as truth. That is, at least, if it is true,
that life holds no purpose than creating offspring.

It is the belief of Dr. Laura, that it is a biological error,
not to engage in activities which produce children. If we are to
accept this morbid description, of a possible meaning of life,
and if we accept it to be true, that procreation is the only
purpose, then we must also accept that a bond of love holds no
purpose than this. When we see a lover touch the face of the
person of their desires, seeing the gentle fingers caress the
soft skin, we must turn away from what our heart tells us, we
must believe that our eyes are lying to us, and we must reason,
that since affection and kindness produce no children, they are
“some kind of biological error.” When the same lover sits alone,
in her room, crying over memories, mourning over thoughts,
knowing that her love is far away — when that same lover must
spend days in total solitary, away from the one who makes the
colors in her world brighter, going through old poetry, looking
at old pictures — when a person is poor in those things which
enrich the heart, because they are away from their lover, then
we must believe Dr. Laura, that it is “some kind of biological
error.” It is true, that a lover who thinks about the one whay
may not come back, is enough to bring out sympathy from every
humane thinker, it is enough to bring out tears in those who
have known such pains…. but since it produces no children, Dr.
Laura will call it “a biological error,” and everything that we
once knew to be life becomes sacrilige in her black god’s
ideology.

By her own definition of a “biological error,” everything that
creativity has spawned becomes heresy, everything that an
independent mind can create becomes taboo, and those things
which make the heart soar with euphoria are condemned. poetry
becomes vanity, art becomes self-loathing, and music becomes
irrelevant. Since they are incapable of producing more children,
of increasing the population, they are unimportant. Can anyone
be so brazenly cold, to hear the serenity of music, to see the
beauty of art, to feel the tranquil nature of poetry — to
understand the depth and meaning of expression, and to reply,
“This is but an error in biology.” What sort of human being can
be so deaf to beauty, so blind to peace, so desensitized against
the very things that bring purpose? I do not believe that a
person can be so depraved. It is but natural to desire to
express our heart, to speak our minds, to act as we like, so
long as no others are hurt. Every law which disallows the
expression of the heart and mind have been known as the
Censorship Laws. But every law which disallows acting as we
like, so long as we do not infringe on the liberty of others,
these laws are known as the Totalitarian Laws. Both are guilty
of the same crime: limiting happiness for some superficial
taboo. I oppose the first as much as I oppose the second.

It may very well be true that Homosexuality can be called “an
error in biology,” but then we would have to call every artistic
expression, every gentle touch of affection, sympathy for pain,
empathy for life — these, also, must be regarded as “errors in
biology.” Whether this is true or not, I will not refrain from
saying what I think, I will not hold back from what my heart
feels. If I were to do this, I would be a traitor of thought,
and a coward of love. Since it is in every man’s own interest to
be honest with himself, poetry becomes an avenue of expression,
artwork becomes a release of emotion, music becomes the
explosion of thought… They may very well not relate to the
procreation of the species, but happiness and peace are
themselves intrinsic values, that we should never rest in
seeking. To admit exhaustion to the forces of iniquity would be
the ultimate surrender…

If a man finds it, in his heart, in his mind, that he is
attracted to those of the same gender, then we should do nothing
to prohibit this. If he can feel the same for a man, the way a
man can feel for a woman, then why is it that some refer to it
as a profanity? It would be committing a disgrace to truth and
justice if one were to call such a profanity. When a man loves a
woman, runs his hands up and down her body, gazes unendingly
into her eyes, plays with her hair, caresses her face, and when
she does the same to him, these are images that few can deny as
love. The emotions of peace and wholeness that take over our
minds, at the thought of such actions, these are but the same
emotions that a man can still have for a man, or a woman for a
woman. No relationship can be condemned as a source of obsenity,
when the partners involved hold a genuine affection for each
other. Perhaps the message I am trying to express is this…
That sex and love are nothing to be ashamed of, regardless of
what we are told, by our peers, by our teachers, by our families
and communities. To condemn a man for choosing to love men
instead of women, is no different than to condemn a man for
choosing to express himself with poetry instead of art. It is
but a preference, and no one suffers at the choice of either.
The only time that suffering can occur in this scenario is when
the man is forced to choose one over the other, due to
Totalitarian Law.

Liberty, justice, and peace may very well be the greatest
standards that we seek. To deny a man his right to express
himself, to ban one sexual orientation or one form of art, is to
commit a crime against liberty and justice. It has only been
weeks since the United States Supreme Court has decided that
homosexuality cannot be banned. Up until this time, millions of
people have been executed, denied employment, or imprisoned for
their sexuality. And we cannot think that this is any different
than when a man is discriminated against for the opinions he
harbors. There are still people in prison today, for what the
state has so lovingly called “crimes against nature.” Those who
have engaged in Homosexual, or even taboo sexualities, have been
imprisoned for up to years. This is not some foreign activity of
centuries past. Rather, it is something that the government has
actively imprisoned people for in the past centuries. It is a
draconian and arcane method of government, as it is opposed to
all principles of liberty, justice and peace. It is a violation
of the mind’s need for freedom, of the heart’s dreams of
tranquility. To deny a man his right to sexuality is just as
profane an action it is to deny a man his right to expression.

Listen to me! These people are your brothers and sisters, they
are your mothers and fathers, they are your sons and daughters!
I admit, you may not be related by blood, but what you do share
together is infinitely greater than the bond of blood. Together,
you all endure the fears of pain and misery, the worry of the
fate of those around you exists to all of you, the dreams of a
better life without suffering and toil are not unknown to the
others…. Know this, that they feel the same as you do, that a
man’s sexuality does not destroy his natural attraction to
goodness, that whatever a man does by himself alone, he may very
well still hold charity and generosity in heart towards
humanity, because he is himself, a Humanitarian. There may very
well be murdering or pillaging Homosexuals, I cannot deny this.
But the same can be said of Heterosexuals, and I would be a fool
and tyrant to condemn every straight person as a murderer or a
thief. But… if you must know anything, know this: that those
preferences or characteristics of a person are rarely
intrinsically bad, and so long as a man’s personal habits do not
cause suffering or pain to others, it must be truly a sin to
judge them as cruel, to hold them up as a symbol of brutality,
to hold them down as a plague to this world. Whatever you do to
the friends of humanity, because of their undeniable nature
which harms none — whatever you do to these comrades of
goodness, understand that you are only destroying the principles
that will lead to a better world, and you are hindering the
progress of every thinker and lover.

Whatever harm you inflict on someone because of a choice they
made that causes no misery to others, you are only doing a
disservice to the cause of humanity.
