Harryette Mullen admits to being “licked all over by the English tongue.” Her fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, published by UC Press, was a finalist for the National Book Award and for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry for its “gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games.” Her work combines the experimentation of the French OULIPO group with an American funk and political awareness. Mullen is associate professor of English and African American Studies at UCLA. Her other books include Muse & Drudge and Trimmings. I’m doing a speech tournament and I have to choose a poem any suggestions on a poem or book preferably a sad one
See if your library still has a copy of Understanding Poetry edited by Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren. If not, go to your local college bookstore and get The Norton Anthology of poetry. If they don’t have a copy of it, they can get it. It’s huge and it will have every poem you are interested in.
Also, you can go to Google and find the complete text of lots of poems. Emily Dickinson would give you a wide selection of sad poems.
What are published poems by African-American poets in which they reflect on their African heritage?

I’m thinking along the lines of Countee Cullen’s Heritage or even Langston Hughes The Negro Speaks of Rivers. The whole poem doesn’t have to be on this topic; it should just be present in some way. Also, I’m far from my poetry collection right now, so if you had text or links to text of the poems, that would help me. Thanks.
For a less recent poet, you might try Phillis Wheatley’s writing. She was a slave poet who was educated by her master. Take a look at these poems, particularly the first two.
