I keep seeing folk submitting verse here and asking for opinions. I am loathe to rain on anyone’s parade but poetry is an art form and by definition ,this means that good poetry will be rare. Yet on here we continually see the most appalling doggerel being praised. If anyone daubs a canvas with paint, is it Art?
Also, please realise that poetry is ,for the most part, subject to the same rules and conventions as any other form of written English
Wow! I did not anticipate such passionate responses. However I do not consider myself an arbiter of what is good and what is not in poetry. I am well aware of Cummings work and that is my point ! He had a command of the language and so could manipulate it to his poetic end. I simply make the point that someone who cannot spell, punctuate ,construct a sentence, or have any idea of form cannot claim to be writing poetry.
By all means express yourself in writing,by all means keep trying but do not delude yourself . The measure of any work is in what others think of it . Anything else is, to borrow from Jill Tweedie, navel gazing.Tweedie
Well said Surfer Soul !
" Pompous" Moi?
You commented on some verse’s that I called poetry and your right, I don’t know how to write properly, I can hardly spell.
But the replys to your own question have encourged me further, because at the end of the day, its how your words effect people that counts.
I will try to improve my poetry/writing skills, but won’t go so far as to get cajoled into a critics sydrome by writing purely for them.

Free Verse poetry does not have a strict pattern of rhyming. It does not have regular meter, rhyme, fixed line length, or a specific stanza pattern.
Many poets of the Victorian era experimented with form. Christina Rossetti, Coventry Patmore, and T. E. Brown all wrote examples of unpatterned rhymed verse. Matthew Arnold’s poem Philomela contains some rhyme but is very free. Poems such as W. E. Henley’s ‘Discharged’ (from his In Hospital sequence), and Robert Louis Stevenson’s poems ‘The Light-Keeper’ and ‘The Cruel Mistress’ could be counted early examples of free verse.
In France, a few pieces in Arthur Rimbaud’s prose poem collection Illuminations were arranged in manuscript in lines, rather than prose.
In the Netherlands, tachtiger (i.e. member of 1880s generation of innovative poets) Frederik van Eeden employed the form at least once (in his poem Waterlelie ["water lily"].
Goethe (particularly in some early poems, such as Prometheus) and Hölderlin used it occasionally, due in part to a misinterpretation of the meter used in Pindar’s poetry; in Hölderlin’s case, he also continued to write unmetered poems after discovering this error.

I Dream’d in a Dream
by Walt Whitman
I DREAM’D in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the
whole of the rest of the earth,
I dream’d that was the new city of Friends,
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love, it led
the rest,
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city,
And in all their looks and words.

Fog

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

I’m one of those people who’s really into books. I have one in my hand at all time, and it’s by far my favorite subject to talk about.
But recently, I’ve been wanting to get into poetry.
Where do I start? The only poet I’ve ever read was Shel Silverstein.
There are many kinds of poets and many kinds of poetry. Some you will like, some you will not. The only way to find out is to READ! READ! READ!

The name Richard Mofe Damijo otherwise known as RMD is a household name in the Nigerian movie industry. Perhaps you would have been wondering why this brilliant actor has not been featuring in movies lately, well the gist is he has moved a ladder higher in his career and has been appointed the Delta State commissioner for Culture.
Before now he was the Special Adviser, on Culture to Delta State Governor, a portfolio received in the arts community as another elevation for one of their own.
The truth is that ever since he joined the state government as culture adviser, RMD has proved his mettle, combined his vast experiences in Arts and Law to deliver service in his State. He had been of immense assistance to many artists and culture-based associations, such that each time the artists look for a possible saviour in government, RMD’s name usually comes among the top five.
He has lately demonstrated his deep concern for the arts through his benevolence to his constituency-National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) aside supporting artistes like Stella Monye as well as the newly discovered comedians through his yearly Made in Warri comic shows.
To his credit, RMD who bagged Best Actor of the year on two occasions said he would forever receive joy and fulfilment from acting, despite his involvement in other vocations.
“Acting gives me fulfilment because that’s what people know me for. Most people won’t ever see me as a lawyer no matter how successful I am at the Bar. They would never want to see me as that because acting is what people consider the work of my hand that God has blessed me with”, explained RMD while disclosing his love and passion for satiric poetry.
On how he’s been able to fare well on stage and screen, the tall, good-looking actor attributed this to his training as a theatre artiste. “I’m passionate about what I do. My training did not stop at the university. I do train myself daily. I always look for the next challenge, I never trained as a journalist, this came along the line and after sometime, I established my PR Company-Whitewater. He is also a promoter who discovers, nurtures and supports talents. He has demonstrated this through the Made in Warri show which he established in 2004.
According to the Delta State born actor, “Made in Warri” is his way of paying back to the society that produced him and also to contribute towards the rehabilitation of the Niger Delta area. His words: “Made in Warri is actually a pilot project for the whole of Niger Delta. Overtime, we shall have to expand it to “Made in Niger Delta”.
Among many films which he featured in, RMD said he would never forget Bridgestone, Violated and of course Out of Bounds which was his first personally produced film. But then, he quickly added that every movie or film comes with its own challenge. He has had opportunities to play diverse roles and he always gets excited whenever he reflects on the variety of roles as a lover, husband, elder, shoemaker and many more.
Born on July 6, 1961, Mofe-Damijo studied at Midwest College, Warri and Anglican Grammar School, Okpara Waterside, in Sapele, in the defunct Bendel State (Now Delta State). He later proceeded to the University of Benin to study Theatre Arts. He graduated in 1983 and shortly after, he started his acting career in Ripples, A TV soap which ran for about eight years. He later featured in another popular soap, Checkmate as Segun Kadiri and has since been a favorite of most soaps and screen shows.
He is also a good cook, a traveller and a poet, but acting on stage remains his greatest passion as it is more challenging to him.
In 1997, RMD enlisted at the University of Lagos to study Law. He is today a qualified lawyer, a top actor and a state commissioner.
What a feat!

What are your thoughts as Mother’s Day is fast approaching? Are you wondering how best to show your feelings for your mother on Mother’s Day? What is the perfect gift that can convey your genuine love and care for your mother without giving hints of flattery or appeasement?
You might get overwhelmed by the variety of Mother’s Day gifts that are available in the market. If you are like many others, you would want to gift her with flowers, especially if she is someone who loves flowers. Because of the traditional associations made, the first flower that comes to mind might be carnations! The association between Mother’s Day and Carnations is very strongly embedded in our minds. There is even an early Christian legend according to which carnations are the flowers that sprung up when the tears of the mother of Christ fell on the ground as she saw the sufferings of her son.
Flowers are very popular on Mother’s Day and they are almost indispensable as gifts on the occasion. You could easily get carnations, hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils for her.
OK, if not carnations or any of the other three mentioned above, you could give other flowers like roses and orchids. Or a mix of carnations, orchids, and roses. Are you happy with these? Or do you, like me, feel that these flowers do not make such great gifts because they removed from their natural surroundings?
Without completely discarding traditional notions, consider this question with an open mind: ‘are carnations the best plant and flower related gift you could give your mother?’ In other words, can you give something that is fuller and more organic than mere flowers?
That is where my suggestion gets its relevance. Gift your mother with flowering plants. They are better than mere flowers because of many reasons. They are alive, inspiring, and ecologically more meaningful. Moreover, they give your mother a chance to make her garden richer and more beautiful.
That being the main focus, let us start off with some other Mother’s Day gifts!
Simple and homemade gifts for mom
A very simple and telling way of showing your mother that you care is by doing everything for her on Mother’s Day. Let her relax on her most comfortable chair and read her favorite book and watch television. You could cook her favorite seafood dish or prepare her favorite dessert.
Crafts are a popular gift item for Mother’s Day. You can make them using common things such as paper by following simple instructions. Or you could write a genuine and unaffected letter for her. If you are comfortable with the medium of poetry, you could write her a poem that would delight her.
Jewelry pieces such as bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and rings can make excellent Mother’s Day gifts. In the apparel category, there are some interesting modern trends. A popular Mother’s Day gift these days is a nice T-shirt set for both the mother and the child.
Now we will move to the natural gifts category, the one that includes plants and flowers.
Plants and flowers for mom
Flowering plants being more natural and alive, they should logically make great gifts. It is surprising why they haven’t become very popular as yet.
Flowering plants are novel gift items for Mother’s Day. These are likely to be more-than-welcome gift for a mother who has been getting carnations year after year. They can be given in various types of containers. You could consider gifting them in baskets, pots, and metallic containers.
Undoubtedly, these plants are going to matter a lot to mothers who love gardening. They have the extra charm of being living things as compared to flowers, which are, although attractive, placed out of context because they are plucked out of nature.
If your mother is a lover of gardening, one of the best things you could do to her is to gift her with a pot of flowering plants. The longer the time she spends with the plants, the better she would feel about your gift and the good emotions that inspired you to give her that gift.
You could buy planted flowers from a good online florist. If you just go to their site and search for their Mother’s Day catalog, you would come across some nice planted flowers. You might even gather enough audacity to go beyond the usual carnations and buy plants.
You could get some add-ons too, such as wine, chocolates, and soft toys. Based on your mother’s likes and dislikes, you can decide whether it is appropriate or not.
