Sometimes it seems that ‘I love you’ has become very common and stale phrase. However, it is not so. These words are magical and eternal. NONONONONO Amores is not dark, and shame on the person who said that! If you read the Latin, or are at ALL familiar with Ovid pre-exile (and to some extent during), he doesn’t take anything seriously, especially when he is trying to convince you he is.

And yes, elegy is a style of meter (one foot shorter than epic, which is the key to understanding the meta-joke of Amores 1.1), and yes, it began as a dirge or mourning meter, but began to change in Greece and later in Rome. Initially the change was probably to compare the act of falling in love to loss or death. Grecian Callimachus was really the first and most famous to use elegy for love poems and erotica, and in Rome it gained popularity with poets like Propertius and to some degree Catullus. Ovid, however, took this somewhat serious love poem and exposed how superficial and empty it really was. The object of supposed love was far less relevant than the poet’s own prowess and cleverness. One scholar, Michael Putnam I think, said something about Ovid taking elegy and ironizing it out of existence. What Ovid does is he takes all of these elements of prior works and then exposes how ridiculous they are, so for the Amores, elegy is quite funny and occasionally dirty. (See Amores 3.7) Later Ovid uses the meter in Tristia ("sadness") to mourn his exile from Rome, but the earlier love works are definitely meant to be taken with a grain of salt and a bit of dry wit. (There are sparse moments of heartfelt sadness though, such as Amores 2.14.)

In English we returned the notion of elegy to funerary poetry even as we changed the meter (Thomas Grey’s Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard for instance).
