There is fun in the hunt for that slim volume of poetry that needs to be read and reappraised, the one that a visiting friend thumbed through and misplaced on the shelf…. It is nice to be drawn back to poets and writers. New Year’s greetings from the West Coast. – E

This sends me to my bookcases (which are no longer organized!) to find and re-read Shelley.

Yes, you are right, alkersr. As posted below, I found some weird glitches in this otherwise solid overview documentary. (As a result, I won’t post segments on earlier Romantic poets.) I find Mary Wollstonecraft actually more fascinating than her daughter; she was extremely ahead of her time, wasn’t she?Her “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” should be more widely read. Her biography, too, is pretty incredible, though her death and her affair with Gilbert Imlay were tragic IMHO.
Mary Wollstonecraft …

Thanks, S. This is what I wrote you about in email last week. I enjoy this film, but I was surprised when in their opening segment they showed a picture of Byron and identified it as Shelley’s and then showed the classic portrait of Shelley and called it Keats! I think it was just some inconsistent production values. Overall the one-hour program was good. Maybe I should post more and just ignore glitches?? It’s now a hot day here. I went from black turtleneck to summer dress in 3 hours! xoxo e

Thanks, Andrew. To my mind, the most interesting of times. If I were to go back in time, I’d choose 1) Romantic Era England 2) The Italian Renaissance 3) Paris in the 1920s.

That is a fantastic portrait of Shelley holding a quill! Wonderful documentary, evocative and insightful. As they say, those were interesting times full of passion. Really enjoyed seeing this.
