I AM romantic. Just last week I was in the wife’s bad books, so I rushed out to buy her some flowers.

I don’t think this is true of all men, either then or now.
There are still romantic types who write love poetry now (and my boyfriend, whilst not forthcoming with the poetry is terribly romantic).
Remember, the romantic poets were but a few men and were not representative of men in general at the time, who regarded women as their possessions (as was the law of the time)
And let’s not forget that Byron was a complete womanising syphilitic bounder! Romantic if you don’t mind one night followed by a dose of the clap!

Changing notions of masculinity. To the common man artistic and literary achievement is no longer considered the apex of male achievement; instead it’s money-making. Literary and artistic skill has become linked, to some people, with effeminate or effeminately liberal men. But then again a lot of historically romantic poetry directed at women should be viewed with scepticism by women, because a lot of it is just ego-tripping, it’s less about the women described than it is about how the woman makes the male subject feel.
I don’t think either men or women are innately romantic or unromantic; it’s an individual thing.

the main cause behind the cessation of romance from today’s men is the women’s liberation movement. Women are to blame- through their determination to be independent they snap at any man who even tries to be romantic- it only takes one feminist encounter to stop a man from making an effort at romance for the rest of their life.
the most romantic men tend to be chauvinistic pigs- those are the only ones who have the strength of nerve to withstand the feminists and to draw the romance out of them a woman has to both know how to swallow her pride and play up to their male ego. Most women these days are too independent to maintain the ‘fragile flower of womanhood’ that these men thrive on, in other words if you act as a helpless fragile little flower you will draw the romance out of the most chauvanistic pig.
