Alliteration gives poems more of a beat to them. Without alliteration, poems would get boring real fast. Not to say that poems without alliteration aren’t good poetry. Most of my poems don’t have alliteration. But what I am saying is that some poets may need to use alliteration to give their poem a beat. It works for some but not for others. Some poets need alliteration, some do not.

If one wants to give their poem more of a beat and rhythm, alliteration is a great technique. Alliteration can be used in many different ways. You might want to say, “Betty blew both bright bubbles,” or “Tell Timmy to trade turkeys.” These examples of alliteration may not be the most poetic of all, but they are legitimate forms of alliteration.

To give a more poetic one: “May the sea shine silvery.” The first two words are not part of the alliterate pattern but most people aren’t looking for perfect alliteration. Alliteration can come to one easily; if they can think of how to put their thoughts and feelings into the right words. It is not as difficult as it seems.

True, my poems don’t have all that much alliteration, but some poets need it and some don’t. That doesn’t mean that either kind of poet is better than the other. It just means different things work for different people. If you’re satisfied with the way your poems are, it doesn’t matter if it has alliteration or not.

This article is simply meant to give people the option to use alliteration if they want to become better poets. Alliteration is used in poetry the world over. Some people used it in different languages while others (even if English is not their native tongue) use it in English. It might be a bit difficult to use alliteration in a different language unless you speak it fluently.

If you don’t speak any foreign language just stick to using alliteration in English and you’ll get god at it over time. For those of you reading this article who are already good at alliteration this article can be meant to give you inspiration to use new and better alliteration in your poetry. Getting back to the original topic, the whole point of alliteration is to give a poem, song, sonnet, or limerick more rhythm and beat to it. Poetry is very versatile.

Some poems need alliteration and some don’t. It’s like medication for poems. Some don’t need it but the ones that do are brought to life when given it. It would be bad for a person who needs medication to be without it. Just as it’s bad for a poem that needs alliteration to be without it. If any of you feel that your poetry is like your baby, then take care of it and give it medicine when it needs it.
