The former US Poet Laureate and New York State Poet has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, though his most dramatic honors come from a wide and appreciative readership. Collins’s poetry collections, including The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems, Nine Horses, Sailing Alone Around the Room, and Picnic, Lightening, have broken records for poetry sales. His writing is marked by inventiveness beyond traditional poetry forms with ironic twists and lyrical turns of phrase that resonate powerfully. An advocate for integrating poetry into everyday life, Collins compiled the anthologies Poetry 180 and 180 More with poems for every day of a typical school year. Billy Collins has been a professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York since 1968 – City Arts & Lectures

There is a magical touch to poetry that speaks or reads a different message to each new ears or eyes.
Sometimes a poem will remind the mind of a cherished moment or of a person who is held close to the heart.
A poem might even hold the words that one had searched for their entire life, only to find it in the pages of a book of poetry.
Poetry can inspire, lend wisdom, and give strength to the subconscious.
For me, poetry is little snippets of the poet�s imagination. The 30 poems within this book are the little snippets of imagination that I have transferred from mind to paper…
I hope that in my poetry I have achieved at least one of the above magical touches for my readers.

Bob’s poems will paint a brighter picture of Luton

An author preparing to publish his second book of poetry about Luton says he’s trying to create positive images of his first home.
The former Middlesex University Spanish lecturer took early retirement so he could devote himself to writing.
And Luton has proved an absolute inspiration to this one-time Luton Grammar School boy.
“I had such a happy childhood here,” he said. “Luton has a magical quality for me. And even though it was quite a rough place when I was growing up, it taught you how to survive.”
Bob, who is married with two sons, launched Verulamium Press three years ago because there are so few publishing houses interested in poetry.
He has printed several books including Poemas A La Patagonia and The River And Other Poems, a translation of the work of Argentinian poet Andres Bohoslavsky.
Luton poems by Robert Gurney is available for £5 from Verulamium Press, 18 Icknield Close, St Albans AL3 4NQ. It is also for sale at the Tourist Information Office on the ground floor of Luton Central Library in St George’s Square.
